Japanese: カブトゴケ - かぶとごけ

A large leafy lichen of the Polytrichum family that grows on the bark and rocks of mountainous areas. It does not have cup or pseudocup spots, but has tomenta on the underside. The symbiotic algae are green or cyanobacteria. There are 21 species in Japan. L. spathulata (Inum.) Yoshim. (illustration), which is common throughout Japan, has a green upper surface, a leathery lichen body, and can reach 30 cm in diameter or more. The lobes are irregularly branched, 1-2 cm wide, truncated at the tip, with a mesh-like unevenness on the upper surface, and produce many small flat lobes. The underside is light brown with unevenness corresponding to the upper surface, and has short light brown tomenta all over.

山地の樹皮や岩上に生えるヨロイゴケ科の大型葉状地衣。盃点や偽盃点はないが，下面にトメンタがある。共生藻は緑藻またはラン藻。日本産は21種。日本各地に多いヘラガタカブトゴケL.spathulata (Inum.) Yoshim.（イラスト）は表が緑色で，地衣体は革質，直径30cm以上になる。裂片は不規則に分枝し，幅1～2cm，先端は裁断形，表には網目状の凹凸があり，扁平な小裂片を多数生じる。裏は淡褐色で，表に対応する凹凸があり，全体に淡褐色の短いトメンタをつける。
