Fernand Khnopff

1858‐1921
Belgian painter. Born in Grembergen near Dendermonde. He enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Brussels, but decided to become a painter, studying at the Academie and under Xavier Mellery. Influenced by Moreau and the Pre-Raphaelites, he turned to Symbolism. In 1884, he participated in the founding of the art group Les Bains (Group of Twenty). He was also involved in the Rosicrucian exhibition organized by the French mystic Péladan, and as Belgium's leading Symbolist painter in Brussels, he produced literary works that alluded to the devilish nature of women and the solitude of artists, while also painting portraits of women of high society.

ベルギーの画家。デンデルモンデ近郊グレンベルヘンGrembergen生れ。ブリュッセル大学法学部に入学したが，画家を志して，アカデミーおよびメルリXavier Melleryのもとで学び，モローやラファエル前派の影響を受けて象徴主義に向かう。1884年美術団体〈レ･バン(二十人組)〉の創設に参加。さらにフランスの神秘主義者ペラダン主宰の〈薔薇十字〉展にもかかわりをもち，ブリュッセルにおいてベルギーを代表する象徴主義の画家として，女の魔性や芸術家の孤高性などを暗示的に表現した文学的作品を制作，一方で上流社会の女性たちの肖像画を描く。
