1858‐1921 Belgian painter. Born in Grembergen near Dendermonde. He enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Brussels, but decided to become a painter, studying at the Academie and under Xavier Mellery. Influenced by Moreau and the Pre-Raphaelites, he turned to Symbolism. In 1884, he participated in the founding of the art group Les Bains (Group of Twenty). He was also involved in the Rosicrucian exhibition organized by the French mystic Péladan, and as Belgium's leading Symbolist painter in Brussels, he produced literary works that alluded to the devilish nature of women and the solitude of artists, while also painting portraits of women of high society.
