After the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, the party was rebuilt in the four occupied zones of the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union, and in 1946 the SPD in the Soviet zone merged with the Communist Party to form the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). In the western occupied zone, the first party conference was held in May 1946, with Kurt Schumacher (1895-1952) as party leader and Erich Ollenhauer (1901-63) as vice leader. Schumacher was an anti-Nazi fighter who had spent more than ten years in a Nazi concentration camp, but he was also an anti-Communist fighter.

...Adenauer exercised strong leadership in the government and the party, and until his retirement he had no equal rival. If SPD leader Kurt Schumacher (1895-1952) had been alive in the 1950s, his strong-willed, fiery personality and leadership skills would have made him a worthy opponent for Adenauer. Under Schumacher's influence, the SPD made strong nationalist claims until the mid-1950s, calling for German reunification and opposing Western integration and rearmament.
