Mount Horai (English spelling)

Japanese: 蓬萊山 - ほうらいさん（英語表記）Péng lái shān

One of the three sacred mountains described in Chinese Taoist thought. It originated during the Warring States period when practitioners of the two states of Qi and Yan, located on the coast of the Bohai Sea, combined the phenomenon of mirages with the theory of Taoism. According to the Records of the Grand Historian and other sources, there are three sacred mountains in the Bohai Sea: Penglai, Fangzhang, and Yingzhou, where immortals live and have the elixir of immortality, the birds and animals on the mountains are all pure white, and the palaces where the immortals live are made of gold and silver. Also, from afar, the three sacred mountains look like clouds, but from up close they are in the sea, and when commoners approach, the wind blows back and they cannot reach them.

Mount Horai

The title of an Imayo song. It is a song about a wedding, and the lyrics are: "Ya, on Mount Horai, Ya, a thousand years old, Ya, Banzai, a thousand autumns, the umbrellas are heavy, Mu, Ya, on the branches of the pine trees, cranes nest, Mu, beside the rocks, Ya, turtles play." It is made up of four lines in a 7-5 rhythm, with some accompaniment inserted here and there. The score is available in Ayanokoji Toshikazu Kyonoki, Tohoku Daihon Imayo, and Roei Ninety-poem Collection, but the Tohoku Daihon does not contain the words Mu and Ya. The section on Seishodo in the Goyusho, for the year Bunsho 1 (1466), reads, "There are two tan of Tokuhakore roei and one tan of Imayo Horaisan," and so it was sung alongside Saibara and roei during the Goyusho.

中国，神仙思想で説かれる三神山の一つ。起源的には，戦国時代に渤海（ぼつかい）沿岸に位置する斉･燕2国の方術者たちが，蜃気楼（しんきろう）現象と神仙説とを付会して唱え始めたものである。《史記》などによると，渤海中には蓬萊･方丈･瀛洲（えいしゆう）の三神山があって，仙人が住み不死の薬があり，山上の鳥獣はすべて純白で，仙人の住む宮殿は金銀でつくられている。また，この三神山は遠くから見ると雲のようにみえるが，近くから見ると海中にあり，俗人が近づくと風が引きもどして行きつけないという。

ほうらいさん【蓬萊山】

今様の曲名。祝言の内容をもつ曲で，歌詞は〈ヤ　蓬萊山には　ヤ　千とせ(歳)ふる　ヤ　万歳千秋　かさ(重)なれり　ムヤ　松の枝（えだ）には　鶴巣くひ　ム　巌がそばには　ヤ　亀遊ぶ〉。七五調4句から成り，ところどころに，はやしことばの類が挿入されている。《綾小路俊量卿記（あやのこうじとしかずきようのき）》，東北大本《今様》と《朗詠九十首抄》に曲譜が伝わるが，東北大本には，ム，ヤのことばは入っていない。《御遊抄》清暑堂の項，文正1年(1466)の条に，〈朗詠　徳是（とくはこれ）二反，今様　蓬萊山一反　有之〉と見え，御遊のときに，催馬楽（さいばら）や朗詠と並んで歌われた。
