Born October 16, 1752, near Hanover
Died May 6, 1796. Bremen German Enlightenment philosopher and writer. He served at the court of Kassel and later became Governor of Bremen. Although he was of local aristocratic origin, he took the side of the rising middle class and opposed conservative forces. He wrote social satire novels full of sharp wit. His main works are Der Roman meines Lebens (1781-87) (The Story of My Life) and Über den Umgang mit Menschen (88) (On Human Intercourse). The latter has endured a long life as a book that teaches social skills and standards of etiquette.
