This is the title of a series of pieces conceived by French composer Erik Satie in the 1920s. It is not intended to be listened to carefully like ordinary musical works, but rather to blend with the everyday sounds of the surroundings and contribute to creating the sound environment of the place. Like furniture, it adds a kind of color to life, but the music itself should be lost in the everyday, hence the name. It is made up of an infinite repetition of short phrases, and is music that draws as little attention as possible. It is noted as a precursor to the American experimental composer John Cage and environmental music.
