From "A Christmas Carol"

…It is a general term for religious folk songs sung during the Christmas season. However, carols are the English term, and in France they are called noël, in Germany they are called Weihnachtslied, and in Spain they are called villancico. In all countries, the songs tend to be familiar and cheerful.

From 【French Music】

...These songs show the influence of Greek and medieval church modes, and are also thought to be remnants of the older Celtic chants of sol, such as the song about plowing a field. When we look at folk songs by function, many of them are related to daily life, and there are many kinds, such as lullabies, nursery rhymes, love songs, dance songs, songs about work or professions, banquet songs (drinking songs, chansons à boire, are popular in this country, reflecting the cheerful Gaulish temperament), chants de conscrits (songs of farewell for young men conscripted into the army), soldier's songs, marches, songs of patriotism, religious songs (there are many kinds, but the Christmas song noël is particularly important), and elegies (funeral songs). Of these, the work songs include songs about plowing, sowing, harvesting wheat, mowing, and picking grapes, and in areas where livestock farming is popular, songs about cowherds and shepherds.
