Among the folk songs of the British Isles, Irish folk songs are as world-famous as Scottish folk songs. Many are in the pentatonic scale, and many in the church modes. The melodies are old-fashioned and varied, and are said to be more emotional than those of Scotland. The many folk-style poems written in the local language by Thomas Moore played a major role in the spread of Irish folk songs. Works such as "My Mind" and "The Minstrel" are well known in Japan. The region was the home of minstrelsy, and the tradition remained until the end of the 18th century. Folk instruments unique to the region include the harp and bagpipes, and an event called feis ceoil contributes to the preservation of the techniques for these instruments.

ブリティシュ諸島の民謡のなかで，アイルランド民謡はスコットランド民謡と並んで世界的に有名。5音音階によるものが多く，教会旋法によるものも少なくない。その旋律は古風で変化に富み，スコットランドのものよりいっそう感情豊かであるといわれる。トーマス・ムーアがこの国のことばで書いた多くの民謡調の詩が，アイルランド民謡流布に大きな役割を演じた。『わが思い』『吟遊詩人』などは日本でもよく知られている。この地方はミンストレルの本拠地であり，18世紀末までその伝統を残していた。民俗楽器としてこの地特有のハープとバッグパイプがあり，フェシ・キョール feis ceoilという行事がこれらの楽器の技術の保存に資している。
