An astronomer and mathematician in the early Tang Dynasty of China. A native of Yongxian County, Qizhou (Fengxiang, Shaanxi Province). He served as Grand Historian for a number of years. In 633 (the 7th year of the Zhenguan era), he created a new armillary sphere equipped with a triple-celestial sphere consisting of an ecliptic ring, an equatorial ring, and a white axis ring. He compiled the Astronomical Journal and Luliquor Journal of the Book of Jin and Book of Sui, and also commented on the Tenshu of Suanjing. During the reign of Emperor Gaozong, he compiled the Rinde calendar, known in Japan as the Yifeng calendar. He discovered that the tails of comets always move on the opposite side of the sun, and compiled records of astronomical and meteorological phenomena, and also wrote the Yishi Zhan.
