Longos - Longos (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek novelist from the 2nd or 3rd century. Thought to have been from the island of Lesbos, his biography is unclear. He is said to be the author of "Daphnis and Chloe," a love story set in a farm on Lesbos about a well-off boy and girl who were raised as poor shepherds, who endure many obstacles before finally marrying in a happy union. The pastoral lyricism of this work had a great influence on later generations.

生没年不詳。2～3世紀ごろの古代ギリシアの小説家。レスボス島の出身と考えられるが伝記は明らかでない。レスボスの農園を舞台にとり、貧しい牧人として育てられた身分のよい少年と少女が、多くの障害に耐えたのち幸福に結ばれる恋愛物語『ダフニスとクロエ』の作者とされる。この作品は牧歌的な叙情性で後世に大きな影響を与えた。
