Johann Kuhnau

Japanese: クーナウ - くーなう(英語表記)Johann Kuhnau
Johann Kuhnau

German Baroque composer. Born on April 6th in Geising, Saxony. Studied at the Holy Cross School in Dresden and completed his law studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1684 he became organist at St. Thomas Church in the same city, and in 1701 he succeeded J. Schelle as university music director and Thomas Cantor (chorus master). His clavier sonatas, such as the Biblical Sonata (1700, Leipzig), are historically significant as multi-movement sonatas that transposed the Italian trio sonata to the clavier, and he also wrote many church cantatas. He was fluent in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, and was active in many ways as a translator of French and Italian, and a skilled lawyer. He died in Leipzig on June 5th, 1722, and the following year, Bach was chosen as his successor as Thomas Cantor.
