Lipstick mushroom - Calostoma japonicum

Japanese: クチベニタケ(口紅茸) - クチベニタケ（英語表記）Calostoma japonicum

A mushroom of the Basidiomycete Gastromycete family, family Botryllaceae. It consists of a spherical or subspherical head about 1 cm in diameter and several root-like parts. The overall height is 2-3 cm. The top of the head protrudes slightly and splits into a star shape, creating small holes with vermilion edges that resemble red lips, hence the name. The surface is amber in color. Spores are produced inside the fruiting body, and after ripening, they emerge from the small holes at the top. It grows in colonies on exposed mountain ground in summer and autumn. A species endemic to Japan.

担子菌類腹菌目クチベニタケ科のキノコ。直径 1cm前後の球形または亜球形の頭部と，数本の根のような部分とから成る。全体の高さは2～3cm。頭部の頂はやや突出して星形に裂け，小孔を生じ，その縁が朱色になり赤い唇を想起するので，この名がある。表面の色は飴色。胞子は子実体の内部に生じ，熟後，頂部の小孔から出る。夏秋に，山地の露出した地面に群生する。日本特産種。
