A freshwater fish of the family Cobitidae (illustration). In the United States and Canada it is called the Oriental weatherfish, and in the UK it is called the loach (which includes other species of the family Cobitidae). It is widely distributed throughout most of Japan, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula, and the eastern part of the Asian continent. It lives in the muddy bottoms of shallow ponds, swamps, rice fields, and waterways in the plains. It often burrows into the bottom, and some species hibernate by burrowing into slightly damp muddy bottoms, especially in winter. It also has the habit of breathing air through its intestines, and can easily tolerate oxygen deficiency. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
