Japanese: フリホル（英語表記）frijol

A Spanish term for beans originating from the New World, such as kidney beans and scarlet beans. It is also called frejol. Frijols have been used as an important source of protein since ancient times in the New World, where there are few large livestock, and are known to have been cultivated in the central highlands of Mexico as early as 4000 BC. インゲンマメ，ベニバナインゲンなど新大陸起源のインゲンマメのスペイン語による総称。フレホルfrejolともいう。フリホルは大型の家畜の少ない新大陸では古くから重要なタンパク源として利用され，メキシコ中央高原では紀元前4000年ごろには栽培されていたことが知られている。現在においても，メキシコでは，トウモロコシやトウガラシとともに欠かせない重要な食べ物の一つとなっている。【山本紀夫】
