...It is located between India and China, and was influenced by the civilizations of both continents, hence the name. It is said to have been coined by the English physician and poet John Leyden (1775-1811), but if this is true, the word first appeared in his work "Discourse on the Language and Literature of the Indo-Chinese Nations" (1805) written during his stay in Penang. In the narrow sense, it refers only to the three countries that were once under French rule: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, but it is an abbreviation of "Federation of French Indochina" (1887-1945). ...
