A port city in southeastern Africa, northwestern Madagascar. Also known as Mahajanga. Facing the Mozambique Channel. Population 106,780 (1993 census), 131,600 (2002 estimate). Founded by Arab merchants in the early 18th century. A shipping port for coffee, sugar, cassava, etc., it also has industries such as soap, sugar refining, and leather processing.
