Indonesian nationalist leader and politician. Born in Wonogiri, Central Java, he studied in the Netherlands and graduated from the Faculty of Law at Leiden University in 1926. He joined the nationalist movement while studying abroad and served as secretary of the Indonesian Association, but after returning to Indonesia he worked with Sukarno and participated in the formation of the Indonesian National Party in 1927. After Sukarno was arrested and imprisoned in 1929, he declared the dissolution of the National Party and formed a new Indonesian Party, but thereafter he deepened his conflict with the Sjahrir faction, which criticized the dissolution of the party.

インドネシア民族主義運動の指導者，政治家。中部ジャワのウォノギリに生まれ，オランダに留学して1926年ライデン大学法学部を卒業。留学中から民族主義運動に加わり，インドネシア協会の書記をつとめたが，帰国後はスカルノと行動をともにし，27年のインドネシア国民党の結成に参加した。29年にスカルノが逮捕投獄されると，国民党の解散宣言を行って新たにインドネシア党を結成したが，以降，この解党主義を批判するシャフリル派との対立を深めた。
