Faroe Islands - Faroe
A Danish archipelago located at 62° north latitude in the North Atlantic, roughly halfway between Scotland and Iceland. It consists of 17 inhabited and 5 uninhabited islands, and sheep farming and fishing are practiced. It was colonized by Norwegian Vikings in the 8th century and was part of Norway, but has been part of Denmark since 1380. During World War II (1940-1945), it was a British protectorate. As a result of the independence movement in 1948, it gained autonomy. Its capital is Torshavn on the island of Strømme. Area: 1,399 km2 . Population: 48,204 (2013).
