A commodity exchange in Yokohama for the purpose of trading silk thread. Its predecessor, the Yokohama Exchange, was established in 1894, and as raw silk and silk thread exports boomed, it attracted attention as a global benchmark market and also served as a barometer for measuring the state of the Japanese economy. It was closed during World War II, but was relaunched in 1951 as the Yokohama Raw Silk Exchange, a members-only organization. The product traded is raw silk, and futures trading is conducted with a six-month contract period, with the standard product being 3A out of 27 according to the raw silk inspection regulations. Before the war, Japan accounted for almost 70% of the world's raw silk production, and around 60% of the production was exported, but after the war, the emergence of cheap nylon, which has a similar luster, led to a steady decline in both domestic and export production, and since the 1970s, cheap imports have been on the market.
