Electromagnetic deflection

Electromagnetic deflection
The bending of the direction of electron motion by the action of a magnetic field created by a coil or electromagnet. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the direction of electron motion while the electron is moving, a force is applied to the electron perpendicular to both the direction of the electron's movement and the direction of the magnetic field, causing the electron's direction of motion to change (Fleming's left-hand rule). Compared to electric field deflection (electrostatic deflection), deflection requires more power and deflection becomes impossible at high frequencies (above about 100 kHz), but because a large degree of deflection can be obtained, it is used in cathode ray tubes for televisions and radars.
