Herbert Marcuse

Herbert Marcuse

American philosopher. Professor at the University of California. Born in Berlin, he was Jewish. Immediately after World War I, he participated in the German Revolution as a Social Democrat. After the defeat of the revolution, he left the SDP and studied under Husserl and Heidegger. In 1932, he left his teacher Heidegger, who was leaning to the right, and joined the Frankfurt School. After the Nazi regime was established, he fled to the United States, where he lived ever since. In the 1960s, he was rediscovered by American civic and student activists, and became their spiritual pillar. He died in Munich in 1979. He aimed to reconcile Marxism with the left-wing position of Freud. His sharp criticism of modern controlled society is well known. His representative works include Reason and Revolution (1941), Eros Civilization (1955), Soviet Marxism (1958), and One-Dimensional Man (1964).
