A city in northern Pakistan, about 70 km north of Lahore. Population 600,000 (1981). It is located in Rechna Doab (meaning land between rivers), with the Chenab River to the west and the Rabi River to the east. The surrounding area is irrigated by the Upper Chenab Canal, and produces large amounts of wheat, rice, and sugarcane. It is the birthplace of Ranjit Singh, the hero who established the Sikh Kingdom in the early 19th century, and is one of the holy sites for Sikhs. It is famous for metal products, especially brass tableware, iron safes, and cutlery, and in addition to traditional industries such as ivory bracelets and hand-woven fabrics, there are also industries such as matches, oil refining, and woolen textiles. パキスタン北部,ラホールの北方約70kmにある都市。人口60万(1981)。西にチェナーブ川,東にラービ川が流れるレチュナ・ドアーブ(河間の地の意)にある。周辺は上チェナーブ用水路によって灌漑され,小麦,米,サトウキビの産が多い。19世紀初めにシク王国をつくりあげた英雄ランジート・シングの生誕地で,シク教徒の聖地の一つとなっている。金属製品とりわけシンチュウ製食器,鉄製金庫,刃物が名高く,象牙製腕輪,手織布などの伝統工業のほか,マッチ,製油,毛織物などの工業が立地する。
