An inland city in the center of Cuba, it is the capital of Villa Clara Province. It has a population of 205,400 (1994). It was founded by Spanish colonists at the end of the 17th century. Since the colonial period, it has developed as a sugar and tobacco producing area, but after the revolution of 1959, it has also developed as an industrial city. It is a key transportation hub in the center where the central highway connecting the east and west of Cuba and the railway network intersect.
