〘noun〙① A person who is in the period of completing his/her studies. A student. [Essay] In the mid-Meiji period, the word came to be used in the second way. This is probably related to the popularity of the word "gakusei" (student), which is listed as a translation of "student" along with " shosei " in the "Illustrated English-Japanese Dictionary with Sounds" ( 1873 ), such as "Student scholar, student ( sei), sho student, reader."

Sho-sho ‥Shau [scholar]

〘 noun 〙① A copyist at a sutra copying office. Someone who copies sutras. Someone whose occupation is copying sutras in general. ※Konjaku (around 1120) Volume 7 "Hiring 40 scribes, they copied out one section of the Lotus Sutra in one day." ② A lower-ranking official in the ministries of Shikibu, Jibu, and Hyobu, as well as in the Dazaifu, Kebiishicho, kokushi, and gunji. In charge of document affairs. A scribe. しょ‐しょう ‥シャウ【書生】

〘名〙① 写経所の写経生。経典を書写する者。ひろく写経を業とする者。※今昔（1120頃か）七「書生四十人を雇て、一日の中に法花経一部を書写し畢(をはり)て」② 式部・治部・兵部の各省や大宰府・検非違使庁・国司・郡司などの役所の下級官人。文書事務をつかさどる。書記官。書記。※宝生院文書‐永延二年（988）一一月八日・尾張国郡司百姓等解「一請被裁糺不下行書生并雑色人等毎日食料事」
