Warty newt

Japanese: クシイモリ（英語表記）warty newt

A species of salamander (illustration) whose males develop fin-like protuberances during the breeding season and engage in flamboyant courtship behavior. All European Triturus newts develop beautiful nuptial colors and fins as secondary sexual characteristics during the breeding season. The crested newt is particularly large, measuring 14-18cm in total length, with females reaching up to 20cm, and has broad, serrated fins along the midline from the back to the tail during the breeding season, and the orange color of the ventral surface is also vivid. This species is widely distributed in Europe, from France in the west, England and the Scandinavian Peninsula in the north, to the Ural Mountains in the east, and lives in forests from plains to mountains of about 1000m.

繁殖期の雄にはひれ状隆起を生じ，華やかな求愛行動を行うサンショウウオ科のイモリの1種（イラスト）。ヨーロッパ産イモリ属Triturusはすべて繁殖期の雄に，第二次性徴として美しい婚姻色とひれ飾を生ずる。とくにクシイモリは全長14～18cm，雌の最大は20cm余りで他種より大きく，繁殖期の雄には背面から尾部にかけて，正中線上に幅広い鋸歯状のひれ飾が発達し，腹面のオレンジ色も鮮やかとなる。本種は西はフランス，北はイギリス，スカンジナビア半島，東はウラル山脈に至るヨーロッパに広く分布し，平地から1000m級の山地までの森林にすむ。
