A city in southern Ehime Prefecture facing Uwajima Bay in the Uwa Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1921 and is the terminus of the Yosan Line and Yodo Line. The city stretches across an alluvial fan and reclaimed land from the Genroku period onwards, and developed as a castle town for the Toda and Todo clans from the Tensho era onwards, and the Date clan from the Genna period onwards, making it the centre of the Nanyo region. Mandarin orange cultivation, pearl and yellowtail farming, and fishery processing such as kamaboko are thriving here. Bullfights and ushi-oni are held at the summer festival of Warei Shrine. Home to Uwajima Castle (historic site), renovated by Todo Takatora, and Nametoko Valley.
