World History - Bankokushi

Japanese: 万国史 - ばんこくし

In a broad sense, it refers to the history of countries around the world, but in Japan, it particularly refers to the textbooks on the history of other countries used in schools in the early Meiji period. In the early Meiji period, not only was science and technology from advanced Western countries introduced, but there was also a strong demand to learn about their historical background, and from this point on, the history of all countries, especially Western countries, was included in school history education. In 1874 (Meiji 7), the Ministry of Education also published the Normal School's "A Summary of the History of All Nations" (2 volumes in total), but this was an addition to volumes two and after of the "A Summary of History" published in 1872 (4 volumes in total, volume one (Imperial Nation), volume two (China), volumes three and four (West)), and the volume of the West was more than four times that of China.

広義には世界諸国の歴史をさすが，日本の教育においてはとくに明治初期に学校で使用された諸外国史の教科書をさす。明治初期は欧米先進諸国の科学･技術の導入だけでなく，その歴史的背景の学習への要求も強く，ここから世界諸国，とくに欧米諸国の歴史としての万国史が学校の歴史教育でとりあげられた。文部省も1874年(明治7)，師範学校編《万国史略》(全2巻)を出したが，これは1872年刊行の《史略》(全4巻，巻一〈皇国〉，巻二〈支那〉，巻三･四〈西洋〉)の巻二以下に加筆したもので，分量は西洋が中国の4倍以上であった。
