An ancient Greek statue made of gold and ivory. It is a compound word of the Greek words chrysos (gold) and elephantinos (made of ivory). Technically, it is made by assembling a wooden frame, covering the naked body with ivory on the surface, and covering the clothing, hair, and other parts with thin gold sheets. Famous examples include the statue of Zeus at Olympia by Phidias, the main statue of the Parthenon, Athena Parthenos, and the statue of the goddess Hera of Argos by Polykleitos. 金と象牙で作られた古代ギリシアの彫像。ギリシア語のchrysos(金)とelephantinos(象牙製の)の合成語。技法的には,木枠を組み,表面の裸体の部分に象牙を,衣装や頭髪その他の部分に金の薄板を張って作る。有名な作例には,フェイディアス作のオリュンピアのゼウス像や,パルテノンの本尊アテナ・パルテノス,ポリュクレイトス作のアルゴスのヘラ女神像などがある。【松島 道也】
