A secret terrorist organization in the United States. It was formed in Tennessee during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War and quickly spread throughout the South. The word Ku Klux is derived from the Greek word kyklos (circle), and Klan is a derivative of the Celtic word clan (descendant). It is abbreviated as KKK. After the war, the South was occupied by federal troops, the former white leaders of the South were barred from politics, and Southern politics was monopolized by the Republican Party, supported by the votes of former black slaves who had been given the right to vote.
