Verkhoyansk (English spelling)

Japanese: ベルホヤンスク(英語表記)Verkhoyansk
Verkhoyansk (English spelling)
A settlement in the Sakha Republic in eastern Russia. It is located about 650 km north-northeast of the republic's capital, Yakutsk, on the Yana River. It was established as a winter camp for the Cossacks in 1638, and became the administrative center of the region. During the imperial era, it was known as a penal colony and as a mining center for nearby gold and tin. Later, reindeer breeding, vegetable cultivation, and fishing became the main industries. Verkhoyansk is particularly known as the coldest place on land outside Antarctica, with a recorded temperature of -67.7°C, but the coldest place is actually the Oymyakon Plateau and the Moma River area southeast of here. There is a regular air route between Verkhoyansk and Yakutsk. Population 1900 (estimated 1991).
