A perennial herb of the Asteraceae family (illustration) that grows in dry grasslands in the alpine zone. It is found in the high mountains north of central Honshu and in Mount Tsurugi in Shikoku. It reproduces vegetatively via underground stems. The stems are about 30 cm tall. The spatula-shaped basal leaves are well developed and remain persistent even when in flower. The stems and leaves are small and few, and the base slightly embraces the stem. The stems and leaves have long, spreading, dirty brown coarse hairs and short glandular hairs, and it resembles Kozolina, but is a separate genus. When cut, it exudes a white milky juice. In July and August, several yellow flower heads grow at the end of the stems. The flower heads consist only of ligulate bisexual flowers, and are 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter.
