After the decree of Emperor Theodosius in 392 which virtually officially recognized Christianity as the state religion, Western Europe was unified under Christianity, and the Christian church, supported by state power, began to monopolize education. Catechumenal schools, which taught the basics of Christian doctrine, arose around the 2nd century with the aim of baptizing pagans as Christians, and reached their peak in the 5th century after Christianity was made the state religion, but disappeared in the 8th and 9th centuries as church schools developed. In the 6th century, various monastic orders, such as the Benedictine Order, were founded to train monks, but from around the 8th century they began to accept and educate secular children. ...
