Gunge - Kooge

Japanese: 郡家 - こおげ
Gunge - Kooge
The former area of the northern part of Yazu Town in eastern Tottori Prefecture. It was incorporated as a town in 1951. In 1957, it was merged with the villages of Kamishito and Nakaishito. In 2005, it was merged with Funaoka and Yato Towns to form Yazu Town. It spreads from the north bank of the midstream of the Yato River to the basin of the Shito River, and river terraces have developed. As the settlement is on a terrace, it was once written as Koge (meaning a small hill with little water). There are remains of a group of ancient tombs and a jori system, and the historic site of the abandoned Haji Hyakui Temple is located here. Himeji in the east is a settlement with a legend of Heike refugees. Reisekiyama in the west is a good place for hiking. The lowlands produce rice, Gosho persimmons, and Nijisseiki pears, while the mountains produce timber. In recent years, electrical machinery and related industries have also moved into the area. Inkuyama ware, which is produced at Kunoji, is famous.

Gunke

Also called Gunya or Gunin. In the Wamyō Ruijūshō it is called “Gūke”, while in the Nihon Shoki and Fudoki it is called “Kohori no Miyake”. It is where the government affairs of the districts, which are subordinate organizations of the country, are conducted. In the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki, the direction and distance between each district’s district office and the villages and shrines within the district are recorded. In addition, the district office had a storehouse (miyake). (→ Gunji )
