This is the diary of Gido Shushin, a Five Mountain Monk from the Northern and Southern Courts period. Gido himself called it the "Nichiyou Kufushu" or "Nikkoshu" (Collection of Daily Practices) to express his daily self-reflection, but the two characters were added to this collection in honor of his pseudonym Kuka Donin (Kuka Dojin). There were 48 volumes in total, but they were quickly dispersed and are now known as the four volumes of the excerpted book "Kuka Nichiyou Kufu Ryakushu." The entries span from 1325 (Shochu 2), when Gido was born, to 1388 (Genchu 5, Kakei 2), when he died, but it is only from March 1367 (Shohei 22, Joji 6) that the diary takes on a typical format; the sections before that and just before his death are likely additions made to compile a chronology. He had connections with many important people in both the Imperial and Military Affairs, including the retired Emperor Suko, Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, Kanto Kanrei Ashikaga Motouji and Ujimitsu, Nijo Yoshimoto, and Shiba Yoshimasa, and is a valuable historical resource not only on the history of Zen Buddhism, but also on politics, society, and culture, and is particularly important as a historical resource conveying the state of Kamakura. Furthermore, his articles on the apocrypha, which show his extensive scholarship, show the highest level of education for Gozan Zen monks at the time. Published works include "Kuka Nichiyo Kougen Ryakushu" (1939, Taiyosha), edited by Tsuji Zennosuke.
