In ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, dome-shaped granaries made of sun-dried bricks were used, sometimes reaching a diameter of 10 meters. Small domes up to 4 meters in diameter are still built today in the exact same way as in ancient times, as granaries, livestock sheds, and homes.

...Even in the soft lagoon soil, a unique foundation was developed in which larch or oak stakes were driven into the hard layer of the earth and then Istrian stone was placed on top of them, making it possible to build buildings directly out of the water. In the 12th and 13th centuries, trading houses called fondacos appeared along the Grand Canal, centered around the Rialto, and laid the foundation for the subsequent history of Venetian housing. These trading houses, including the Turkish trading houses, are said to have their origins in late Roman villa architecture and Byzantine architecture, and are called the Veneto-Byzantine style, but they also showed influences from Islamic architecture. ...
