It is a member of the order Anthoathecata, class Hydrozoa, and family Polyhydra. It has hydroflowers at the end of hydrostalks about 3cm tall, and attaches to seaweed and the like by hydroroots. The hydrostalk is slightly bent, then bends sharply at the top to join the hydroflower. The hydroflower is relatively large, with about 10 short tentacles surrounding the mouth at the end, and about 20 long tentacles arranged in a row at the bottom of the hydroflower. The reproductive organs are branched tufts, each of which bears several asci, and are produced inside the long tentacle ring. It is commonly found in shallow inland bays south of central Honshu, and is also distributed along the coast of Europe.
