A Rinzai sect monk in the early Edo period. His pen name was Ishin. He is usually called Konchiin Suden. He was given the title Ensho Honko Kokushi while he was still alive. In 1573 (Tensho 1), when the Muromachi Shogunate fell, his father Isshiki Hidekatsu died, and he became a monk under Genpo Reisan (1535-1608) of Nanzen-ji Temple. He qualified as a chief priest at the age of 26 and served at various temples, and in 1605 (Keicho 10) he took up residence at Konchiin Temple as the 270th chief priest of Nanzen-ji Temple. In 1608, he succeeded Saisho Shotai/Shoda as secretary for diplomatic documents under Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sunpu (Shizuoka Prefecture), but he gradually rose to prominence and was involved in key roles in the Shogunate government. He was involved in the Missionary Expulsion Order, Temple Laws, and Laws for the Nobles, and is said to have been behind the idea of the inscription on the bell at the Great Buddha Hall of Kyoto's Hokoji Temple, which was the beginning of the attack on Osaka Castle. He also insisted on strict discipline in the Purple Robe Incident, which drew criticism from the public and earned him the nickname "Daiyokuzankikoninsenjoji Akukokushi" (Daiyokuzankikoninsenjoji Akukokushi), and was also criticized by Takuan as a "Heavenly Demon." However, he made great contributions to the early shogunate administration and was worthy of the name of the black-robed prime minister. His books include "Ikoku Nikki," "Honkou Kokushi Nikki," and "Honkou Kokushi Hōgo."
