A group of 19th-century Italian painters. The name derives from the term macchia (color spots), which refers to the rough paint strokes they used. The group was founded when Serafino de Tivoli (1826-92), who had visited the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855, returned to Florence and reported the results of his journey to his fellow painters who had gathered at the Café Michelangelo, who had long been anti-academic. He saw the paintings of the Barbizon School at the Paris Universal Exhibition and saw in their powerful naturalism the path they should take in the future.

19世紀イタリアの画家グループ。彼らが用いた粗い絵具のタッチを意味する〈マッキアmacchia(色斑)〉という用語からこの名が生まれた。グループの誕生は，1855年のパリ万国博覧会を見たデ･ティボリSerafino de Tivoli(1826‐92)がフィレンツェに戻って，以前から反アカデミズムを唱えていた〈カフェ･ミケランジェロ〉に集う仲間たちに旅の成果を伝えたことに始まる。彼はパリ万博会場でバルビゾン派の絵画を見，その力強い自然主義に，彼らの今後進むべき道を見いだしたのであった。
