Arminius, Jacobus
Born: October 10, 1560 Odebatel
Died October 19, 1609. Leiden. A theologian from the Netherlands. The founder of the Arminian sect. His Dutch name was Jacob Harmensen. He studied at the universities of Leiden, Basel, and Geneva. In 1588, he returned to Amsterdam from Rome and became a pastor of the Reformed Church. He was a professor of theology at Leiden University from 1603 until his death. He valued a free spirit, criticized the standardized Calvinism of the Netherlands, and argued for the free will of human salvation in opposition to predestination (→predestination). As a result, he had a fierce debate with Gomars, an orthodox Calvinist (→Gomarsians). The debate continued after his death and led to the formation of the Arminian sect.

He was killed in a civil war within his own tribe, but was praised by the historian Tacitus as a national hero and "the liberator of Germania."
