Japanese feature films are broadly divided into modern dramas and period dramas, and those that deal with the period before the Meiji Restoration are called period dramas. They are also called "magemono". Until World War II, period dramas were made by specialized film studios, directors, and actors, and this was a phenomenon unique to Japan. At first, they were live-action Kabuki plays, but gradually developed into feature films, and their style was often action scenes, comparable to American westerns. Depending on the era and content, there are a variety of types, such as courtier stories, travel stories, historical films, and sword fighting films. Famous period drama actors include Onoe Matsunosuke, Okochi Denjiro, Bando Tsumasaburo, Arashi Kanjuro, Kataoka Chiezo, Ichikawa Utaemon, and Hasegawa Kazuo. Famous works include "Tadatsugu Tabi Nikki", "Tange Sazen", and Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954).

日本の劇映画を現代劇と時代劇とに大別し，明治維新以前を扱うものを時代劇映画という。〈まげもの〉とも。第２次大戦まで時代劇は専門の撮影所・監督・俳優で作られ，これは日本独自の現象であった。最初は歌舞伎の実写だったが次第に劇映画として発展，作法は活劇が多く，米国の西部劇に匹敵。時代や内容に応じて，王朝物，股旅(またたび)物，歴史映画，剣戟(けんげき)（チャンバラ）映画等種類は雑多である。有名な時代劇俳優は尾上松之助，大河内伝次郎，阪東妻三郎，嵐寛寿郎，片岡千恵蔵，市川右太衛門，長谷川一夫ら。有名作品は《忠次旅日記》《丹下左膳》，黒澤明の《七人の侍》（1954年）等。
