Shosei

A Chinese poet from the late Ming Dynasty. His pen name was Bojing and his pen name was Taikoku. He was born in Jiling (Tianmen County, Hubei Province). During the Hui Sikke War in 1610 (the 38th year of the Wanli era), he looked up to Lei Sigai as his teacher and was influenced by the Gong'an school. He retreated to a mountain temple and developed a realm of poetry that was described as deep and solitary. When his work "Return of Poetry," which he wrote with Tan Yuanshun, a fellow native of his hometown, became a huge hit, he was seen as the leader of the Jiling school. He was a wanderer and held a casual position in Nanjing, the secondary capital. He pursued the pursuit of true poetry by visiting landscapes and mountains, but he also isolated himself from others, which led to him being harshly criticized by Qian Qianyi as a devilish poet. After his father's death, he resigned from his post as a scholar at Fujian University, and when he returned home he was accused of visiting Mount Wuyi, along with the corruption he committed during his term in office. His later years were unfortunate, and he devoted himself to writing the Langgama Sutra. He died on June 21, 1625 (Tenkei 5), three days after receiving the Five Precepts and taking the name Danzan. The Inshukenshu is a collection of 32 volumes.

中国、明(みん)末の詩人。字(あざな)を伯敬(はくけい)、号を退谷(たいこく)といい、竟陵(きょうりょう)（湖北省天門県）に生まれる。1610年（万暦38）の会試合格のおり雷思霈(らいしはい)を師と仰ぎ、公安派の影響を受けた。山寺にこもって深幽孤峭(こしょう)と評される詩境を開き、同郷の譚元春(たんげんしゅん)と著した『詩帰(しき)』が一世を風靡(ふうび)するに及び、竟陵派の首魁(しゅかい)と目された。行人(こうじん)並びに陪都南京(ナンキン)の閑職にあって、その主張とする真詩を求めて山水に遊ぶ一方、自らを人から遠ざけたため、のち銭謙益(せんけんえき)からは詩妖(しよう)、鬼趣と酷評された。父の死により福建提学僉事(ていがくせんじ)を辞職、帰郷するおり武夷山(ぶいさん)に遊んだことが在任中の科挙不正ともども弾劾され、晩年は不遇で、『楞厳経(りょうごんきょう)』に沈潜するに至った。その死は五戒を受けて断残と名のって3日後の1625年（天啓5）6月21日である。『隠秀軒集』32巻がある。
