The capital of the Republic of Guatemala and the largest city in Central America. Population 1,167,495 (1995). Located south of the central plateau, at an altitude of 1,493m, the city has a warm climate. In 1773, Antigua, the centre of the Viceroyalty of Guatemala, was hit hard by an earthquake, and in 1776 the city became the capital. After Guatemala gained independence in 1821, it briefly served as the capital of the Central American province of Iturbide's Mexican Empire, and then served as the capital of the Central American Union from 1823 to 1833.
