The capital of the Republic of Guatemala and the largest city in Central America. Population 1,167,495 (1995). Located south of the central plateau, at an altitude of 1,493m, the city has a warm climate. In 1773, Antigua, the centre of the Viceroyalty of Guatemala, was hit hard by an earthquake, and in 1776 the city became the capital. After Guatemala gained independence in 1821, it briefly served as the capital of the Central American province of Iturbide's Mexican Empire, and then served as the capital of the Central American Union from 1823 to 1833.

グアテマラ共和国の首都であり，中央アメリカ最大の都市。人口116万7495(1995)。中部高原の南に位置し，標高1493mにあるため，気候は温暖である。1773年にそれまでグアテマラ総督領の中心地であったアンティグアが地震で大打撃を受けたため，76年に本市が首都となった。1821年のグアテマラ独立以降，短期間イトゥルビデのメキシコ帝国中米州の首都となり，ついで23年から33年まで中央アメリカ連合の首都が置かれた。
