A festival in which participants, almost completely naked, carry a portable shrine, wrestle with each other, and parade in formation. It is held on the night of New Year's Eve and at New Year's festivals such as Koshogatsu, as well as at summer purification festivals and autumn festivals. The New Year's naked festival represents the rebirth of people who have completed their abstinence period, while the summer naked festival originated as a purification ritual to cleanse away impurities. It is held nationwide, and some of the best-known examples include the Somin Festival at Kokuseki-ji Temple in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, the Naoi Shinto Ritual at Owari Okunitama Shrine in Inazawa City, Aichi Prefecture, the Saidaiji Eyo in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, the Tamatori Festival at Hakozaki Shrine in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, the Naked Festival at Mitsuke Tenjin Shrine in Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and the Nagoshi Shinto Ritual at Kamo Mioya Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine) in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.

参加者が裸に近い姿で神輿をかついだり，もみ合ったり隊列を組んで練ったりする祭り。年越しの晩の行事や，小正月といった正月の祭りのほか，夏の祓の祭りや秋祭りなどでも行なわれる。正月の裸祭は物忌を終えた人々が新しい生命力を得て復活した姿を示すものであり，夏の裸祭は穢れを払う禊に起源をもつ。全国的に行なわれ，岩手県奥州市の黒石寺（こくせきじ）蘇民祭，愛知県稲沢市の尾張大国霊神社の儺追神事（なおいしんじ。→裸祭），岡山県岡山市の西大寺会陽，福岡県福岡市東区の筥崎宮の玉取祭，静岡県磐田市の見付天神裸祭，京都府京都市の賀茂御祖神社（下鴨神社）の夏越神事（なごししんじ）などが知られる。
