Ashiya [city] - Ashiya

Japanese: 芦屋[市] - あしや

A city in the southeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture, east of Kobe City. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The central city area developed from a small settlement on the Saigoku Kaido road, and was a villa area until the early Taisho period, but it became an upscale residential area with the establishment of Ashiya Station on the Tokaido Main Line and the opening of the Hankyu and Hanshin Electric Railways. The city area expanded into Osaka Bay with the construction of Ashiyahama land reclamation, and Ashiyahama Seaside Town was also established. Further reclamation and construction are being carried out, with the aim of becoming a marine city with international facilities. It is famous for its upscale residential areas, including Rokurokuso. The Ashi Driveway connects the city to Arima Onsen. The city suffered major damage in the Southern Hyogo Prefecture earthquake in January 1995, with 433 deaths and 8,616 houses destroyed or burned. 18.47 ^km2 . 93,238 people (2010).

兵庫県南東部，神戸市東隣の市。1940年市制。中心市街地は西国街道の小集落から発達，大正初期まで別荘地であったが，東海道本線芦屋駅の設置，阪急・阪神電鉄の開通で高級住宅地となった。芦屋浜埋立て地造成によって大阪湾に市域をひろげ，芦屋浜シーサイドタウンもでき，さらに埋立て造成され，国際施設のある海上都市をめざしている。六麓荘をはじめとする高級住宅街があることで有名。有馬温泉との間に芦有ドライブウェーが通じる。1995年１月の兵庫県南部地震では死者433人，倒壊・焼失家屋8616戸の大きな被害をうけた。18.47km²。９万3238人（2010）。
