A former town in Hioki District, in the western part of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is an advanced agricultural region in the southern part of the peninsula, with rice cultivation in the lowlands, vegetable cultivation such as shallots and white leeks on the sand dunes of Fukiagehama, and sweet potatoes and tobacco on the plateau. Livestock farming is also carried out. In November 2005, it merged with Kaseda City, and the towns of Kasasa, Oura, and Bozu in Kawabe District to become a city, Minamisatsuma. 72.25 km2 .
