Cancer occurring in the rectum. It is most common in people aged 40 to 60, and occurs most frequently in the rectal ampulla. In the early stages, there are often no symptoms. Symptoms include thin stools, mucus and blood in the stool, and tenesmus. As the disease progresses, weight loss and anemia occur. It can metastasize to the liver relatively early. It is diagnosed by proctoscopy. The radical operation is rectal resection, but anus-preserving surgery has become widespread, and if an anus is resected for cancer of the lower rectum, an artificial anus is constructed.

直腸に生じる癌。40〜60歳に多く，直腸膨大部に好発する。初期には無症状のことも多い。便が細くなり，粘血便，血便，しぶり腹などの症状がある。進行すると体重減少，貧血などが起こる。比較的早期に肝臓に転移することがある。直腸鏡で診断。根治手術は直腸切除で，肛門温存手術が広く行われるようになり，直腸下部の癌で肛門切除した場合は人工肛門を造設する。
