Around 1925-35, the "Japanese Capitalism Debate" divided the Japanese Marxist economics community in two over the definition of the nature of Japanese capitalism, and these people argued that the essence of Japanese capitalism was military and semi-feudal in nature. The name "Lecture School" originated from the fact that this school advocated their own theory mainly in the "Japanese Capitalism Development History Lectures" (1932-33), published by Iwanami Shoten. The leading debaters were Yamada Moritaro and Hirano Yoshitaro, and their major works were later published as "An Analysis of Japanese Capitalism" (34) and "The Mechanism of Japanese Capitalist Society" (34). Other major debaters were Hani Goro, Hattori Yukimasa, Yamada Katsujiro, and Otsuka Kinnosuke. Opposing this was a group of scholars and critics (the so-called labor-farmer faction) including Mukaizaka Itsuro, Ito Yoshimichi, Tsuchiya Takao, and Ouchi Hyoe, but the debate was carried over unresolved until after World War II, and it became one of the points that distinguished the Japanese Communist Party from the Japan Socialist Party.
