Arab philosopher. Born in Basra (or Kufa). Known as Kindi because of his origins as a Kindaite in South Arabia, he is one of the few pure Arabs in the history of Islamic philosophy, and is therefore honored as the "Arab philosopher." Under the patronage of the Abbasid Caliphs al-Ma'mun and al-Mu'tasim (reigned 833-842), he made a major contribution to translating Hellenistic texts into Arabic. As a thinker, he had an eclectic worldview that combined Neoplatonism and Aristotelian philosophy, and became the founding father of the later Islamic Peripatetic school of philosophy. On the other hand, he worked to harmonize religion and philosophy. He was a man of great learning, and his writings covered a wide range of subjects, some of which were translated into Latin in medieval Europe.
