The Bulgars (called Proto-Bulgarians in Bulgarian history) led by Asparuh played a role in the formation of the Bulgarian state and nation, and their mutual influence with the South Slavs is unclear due to the lack of historical documents, but they were eventually assimilated by the overwhelmingly more numerous South Slavs, and the title of the head of the state was changed from khan to the Slavic knez.
