Potholes

A circular depression formed when the riverbed or riverbank is made of hard bedrock. It is also called a kameana or pothole. If the surface of the bedrock is uneven, gravel that falls into the depression rotates due to the eddy current, cutting into the bedrock and digging a cylindrical hole. There may be worn round pebbles remaining at the bottom of the pothole. The diameter of the potholes ranges from a few centimeters to several dozen meters, and some are several meters deep. The potholes near Nezame-no-toko on the Kiso River and Nagatoro on the Arakawa River are famous. Potholes formed by wave action are called sea erosion potholes, and potholes formed by glacial river flow are called glacial mills.

河床や河岸が硬い岩盤からできている場合に生ずる円形のくぼみ。かめ穴、ポットホールpot holeともいう。岩盤の表面に凹凸があると、そのくぼみに落ち込んだ礫(れき)が渦流によって回転し、岩盤を削って円筒形の穴を掘る。甌穴の底には摩耗した丸い小石が残っていることもある。甌穴の直径は数センチメートルのものから十数メートルに及ぶものまであり、深さも数メートルに達するものがある。木曽(きそ)川の寝覚ノ床(ねざめのとこ)、荒川の長瀞(ながとろ)付近の甌穴が有名である。なお、波の作用によって生ずる甌穴を海食甌穴、氷河性河流による甌穴を氷河臼(きゅう)という。
